Translation Tips

Thai Translation Tips & Challenges

Because of its many differences from English, Thai poses many challenges during translation.

Thai is a tonal language with tones determined by the consonant class, syllable type, tone marker, and vowel length. Using the wrong tone can not only sound bizarre but alter the meaning of a word.

Translating Thai demands a choice among Northern, Northeastern, Southern, and Central dialects. In addition, the translation requires a pick from Common, Formal, Rhetorical, Religious, and Royal registers.

The unique Thai alphabet stands taller than the Latin alphabet. Thai text generally takes up 15 percent more space than its English counterpart. It also uses tone marks, which do not exist in English. Fortunately, the Thai alphabet uses only a single-byte set, which is the same as in English.

Thai text has no space between words. Instead, the spaces show the end of clauses and sentences. Breaking Thai text on a screen or page requires more thought and effort than breaking English text.

Thai verbs have no tenses. Context and adverbs, such as “yesterday” and “tomorrow,” reveal when a sentence is taking place.

Passive voice, which is commonly used in business, technical, and formal speech in English, is only used in Thai to show negativity.

Although English-speaking countries often poke fun at those in power, in Thailand, "it is illegal to defame, insult, or threaten the king, queen, heir-apparent, heir-presumptive, or regent."

Varieties

Thai Varieties and Dialects

Though Thai consists of only one language, it comprises the following four recognized main dialects, which correspond to areas of the country, and numerous local varieties.

  • Northern (Khammuang). This dialect is strongly influenced by the border neighbor of Lao. The northern part was once a different country known as the Kingdom of Llanna.

  • Northeastern (Lao): Spoken in the poorest region and by the largest population, this dialect is also heavily influenced by Laos and contains many Laotian words.

  • Southern (Tai): This dialect has the fastest pace with natives shortening sentences to one or two words and words to single syllables.

  • Central (Klang): Also known as Bangkok Thai, this is the dialect that is taught in schools, appears on TV, and is theoretically understood by everyone. Though concentrated in the economic and political center of the country, this minority dialect is not spoken by everyone.

Thai also has five registers or classes, which are ways of speaking:

  • Common: A very informal version only used among close relatives and friends.

  • Formal: Used in magazines and newspapers, this respectful variety is similar to the standard written version of the language.

  • Rhetorical: This register is reserved for public speaking, such as by politicians.

  • Royal: This class is used when addressing the Royal Family or talking about them.

  • Religious: This variety is used by monks or when talking about religion.

Translators

Professional Thai Translators

The complexity of the Thai language and its profound difference from English make automated translation problematic even for basic understanding. The meanings of words can change depending on context and vocal tone. Word choices also depend on the dialect use and the register or class. For an English sentence, a Formal translation in the Central dialect will differ from a Rhetorical translation in the Northern dialect.

Only a human being can adequately translate documents, software, apps, turnkey multimedia, ecommerce, eLearning, and websites.. This is why Andovar depends on professional Thai translators who are native speakers of the area you want to target. To locate experts with the best skills, we test applicants on their fluency in both Thai and English, accuracy in grammar and vocabulary, knowledge of specific industries, and ability to communicate effectively.

Once accepted, these translators must go through rigorous onboarding processes that hone their talents to meet our high standards of customer service. In addition to extensive training and qualifications, our translators are also well-adapted to using localization industry-leading localization technologies to ensure top-notch quality with each and every translation we complete.

Voiceover

Professional Thai Voiceover

The unique issues of a professional Thai voiceover involve more than translating a word from one language to another.

  • What dialect do you use? An executive from Bangkok talking to clients speaks differently than a farmer from Northern Thailand who chastises his children.

  • How much slang or colloquial speech is appropriate? Familiar expressions that have no place in business dialog are welcome in a TV drama.

  • Most importantly, what register or class of speech do you use? Two old friends share a drink in Common while a politician discusses the latest infrastructure projects in Rhetorical.

At Andovar, our professional Thai translators take all such issues into account because they are native speakers and professional actors. Beyond linguistic ability and cultural sensitivity, we look for talent with expertise in script comprehension, voice projection, and clear action. The professional Thai voiceover must engage audiences with compelling acting that works for streaming services, movies, TV programs, advertising, corporate communications, online primary education.

We rely on experienced directors, pronunciation guides, and language QA to handle narration, UN-style recording, and dubbing through lip-sync or scene sync. Companies like Netflix, Hyatt, Hilton, and Ciena look to us for voiceovers in TV dubbings, documentaries, games, corporate narration, training, and eLearning.

Websites

Thai Website Translation Services

Of Thailand’s nearly 70 million people, almost 49 million use the Internet and 55 million use social media. The Thai typically use their smartphones to browse the web with more than 90 million mobile connections. Many have more than one such connection, which accounts for a number that is almost 130 percent of the total population.

Statistics like these inform the Thai website translation services of Andovar. We don’t simply convert one sentence from English to Thai. Rather, we also look at prevailing market conditions, area technology, and cultural norms to localize your website. Our intelligent transcreation brings companies like Spotify, Amway, Qnet, Agoda, and Hatch to our doorstep. They trust us to broadcast their brand message when internationalizing the eCommerce platforms, landing pages, and knowledge bases of their company websites. To make our efforts easier to find, we also manage Search Engine Optimization (SEO) terms.

Our professionals are not only expert translators but also specialists in Internet technology and your industry. We integrate Training Management System (TMS) connectors, Application Program Interfaces (APIs), and Content Management System (CMS) plug-ins with Magento, WordPress, Shopify, and other CMS platforms. We take care of each aspect of website localization, from selecting appropriate terminology to designing an appropriate UI.

Software

Thai Software Translation Services

At Andovar, our professional translators handle every aspect of Thai software translation services. Because we rely on specialists in your industry who are also native speakers, we are as adept in dealing with UI, help, resource, and other files as we are in deciding between the Northern or Central dialect and between the Formal or Rhetorical register.

For our high-quality translations, we depend on cutting-edge software localization technology and process. Multidimensional Quality Metric (MQM) Quality Assurance then verifies the technical accuracy and functions of the result. Among our satisfied clients are Microsoft, Symantec, and Netsuite. They return to our translation services because we take into account cultural norms, communication styles, language use, and local work habits in our efforts.

If you hope to reach a global market with your cloud-based, server-based, or mobile applications, we’re happy to recommend strategies that make localization more convenient and efficient. For example, allow for more room in your layout, UI, and fields for text expansion. Thai takes up to 15 percent more space than the equivalent English. Some languages expand by up to 30 percent.

Games

Thai Game Translation Services

Whether played on consoles, PCs, mobile and handheld devices, or consoles, games like first-person shooters, virtual reality (VR), and Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) are just as popular in Thailand as they are in the rest of the world. Thai game translation services by Andovar ensure that players in that country enjoy the same experience that your customers in the English-speaking world do.

The following are just some aspects of game translation that we can handle:

User interfaces

Into English

Thai to English Translation Services

Official reports put the number of English speakers among native Thai at around 27 percent of the entire population. Some even lower that estimate to around 10 to 15 percent. These figures represent those who speak some English. Those who are actually fluent in English comprise an even smaller percentage.

These statistics mean that any information you receive from co-workers, vendors, customers, and other interested parties in Thailand will most likely be in Thai. If you’re interested in gisting, or getting the main idea of what you receive, you can try online or automated translation programs. But to reach a true understanding of what any of these communications mean, you can turn to the Thai to English translation service of Andovar.

Our professional translators are native speakers of English who are also fluent in Thai. We also assign specialists in your field, which ensures that the translation is technically accurate, relevant to your business, and culturally sensitive. If you only have printed or hand-written materials to work with, we convert them first to machine form through Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

We also handle subtitles in Over-The-Top content when they need to be localized from Thai to English. If you want to be sure that any English documents translated to Thai are accurate, we can also back-translate legal/litigation, medical, and corporate communications.

Subtitles

Thai Subtitle Translation Services

When companies like Netflix, Disney, NetEase, and iflix need their YouTube media, corporate videos, OTT content, and streaming services, they turn to Andovar. They trust that our Thai subtitle translation services will do justice to the linguistic accuracy, literary message, and artistic intent of the source subtitles. We work with all subtitle formats, including SRT, TTML, VTT, SCC, and more.

Our efforts ensure that the localized versions take up an appropriate amount of screen area even though Thai takes up to 15 percent more space than English. They also keep pace with the speaker so that the audience understands the presentation in the same way that an English-speaking viewer would. A challenge particular to the language is knowing where to break a subtitle line. Thai only uses spaces to separate phrases and sentences, and not words.

We rely on professional translators who are also native speakers of Thai, and can choose the appropriate dialect and determine the correct register, such as Common, Formal, Rhetorical, Royal, and Religious. Through the use of the most advanced tools and platforms, we can manage template creation, SDHS subtitles, and captions.

Documents

Thai Document Translation Services

Fast Internet connections, smartphones, tablets, and a desire to preserve nature have prompted the transition to a paperless society. Despite that aspiration, business and industry still demand printed materials. Your company may produce everything from marketing brochures to technical manuals, which also have their online counterparts. When you want to port all these materials to vendors, colleagues, and clients in Thailand, you can turn to the Thai document translation services from Andovar.

We can take care of as much or as little of the publishing process as you want. If you have printed or hand-written sources, we turn them into online files through OCR. We can then internationalize the source files, design layouts for them, and create graphics that are culturally meaningful to your target audience. We edit the drafts and publish the finals in digital or printed form. Among the tools we use are InDesign, Illustrator, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word.

We rely on professional translators who are native Thai speakers to conduct the localization to ensure an accurate representation of your brand. Among the companies that trust us with their marketing materials, technical instructions, Standard Operating Procedures, and operator and service manuals are Siemens, Transocean, Minor Group, and Chevron.

Elearning

Thai elearning Translation Services

E-learning provides an affordable solution for training your employees and clients. It stands out as more cost-effective than hiring a live instructor, avoids scheduling and space conflicts, disperses your efforts without regard to geography, and encourages the student to learn at his or her pace. The Thai e-learning translation services of Andovar localize your training to the audience in Thailand.

Our native Thai translators are also fluent in English and specialists in education. They tailor the lessons so that they are appropriate to the local dialect and appropriate register or class. For example, a lesson on the ruling family can use the Central dialect and the Royal register, while training targeted to businesses in Songkhla uses the Southern dialect and the Formal register. This sensitivity to culture has companies like Learnship, Cegos, Docebo, and Learning.com coming to us for our Thai elearning translation services.

We work with tools like Articulate 360, Articulate 360, Captivate, and Lectora to internationalize courseware, games, videos, software, mobile apps, and Learning Management Systems (LMSs). As part of our turnkey solutions, we take care of voiceovers and text translations, and ensure that our quizzes and presentations are SCORM-compliant. Integration testing then verifies that the results you receive in Thai are equal to those for English.

Facts

Thai Language Facts

Because Thai is the official language of Thailand, it is spoken by over 36 million people in that country, which has a total population of almost 70 million in 2021. Outside the country, it is spoken by over 1.5 million people in Vietnamese and 567,000 in Laos. Los Angeles, California, has the largest concentration of Thai speakers outside of Thailand at 80,000. The language has its own script and there is no official way to transcribe Thai into Latin script.

The language is related enough linguistically to Laotian that they share many similar words. Many Laotians speak and read Thai. The language is tonal with five tones, making it a challenge to learn for speakers of English, which has no tones.

However, the grammar is easier. Words do not change according to tense, number, or gender, and Thai has no conjugations, inflections, or declensions. Sometimes, markers such as “yesterday” appear in a sentence to imply tense.

As of 2020, Internet penetration in Thailand reached 76 percent with a predicted growth to 84 percent by 2026. Over 53 million browse the Internet on mobile phones, which is the most used surfing device. This is close to the number of social media users in the country.
